Hemlata Mistry is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at Widener University, where she has mentored undergraduate students in Drosophila genetics research since joining the faculty. She teaches introductory biology, genetics, and advanced cell/molecular biology electives.
- Education: PhD in Genetics (University of Cambridge, 1999), BS in Molecular Biology (University of Glasgow, 1993)
Research Interests focus on Drosophila melanogaster, particularly:
- Genetic mechanisms regulating nervous system development
- RNA and protein degradation pathways in neuronal fate decisions
- Impact of embryonic wounding on central nervous system architecture
Scientific Awards include:
- Cynthia H. Sarnoski Faculty Fellowship (2013–2015)
- Faculty Development Grant (2015–2016)
- Provost Grant
Key Publications highlight her work in integrating research with education and uncovering transcriptional networks in Drosophila. She collaborates with programs like the Genetics Education Partnership (GEP) and contributes to undergraduate research initiatives.
