Lisa Doerksen is a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) Cluster of Excellence project, Knowledge in Crisis, based in the Department of Philosophy at the Central European University (Vienna). She completed her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Toronto in 2023 after earning a BA in Philosophy (Honours Specialization) and Art History (Major) from Western University.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Philosophy, University of Toronto
- BA in Philosophy (Honours Specialization) and Art History (Major), Western University
Dr. Doerksen's research centers on the relationship between first-person subjective experience and objective third-person accounts, identifying a fundamental gap that constrains how conscious subjects can be understood objectively. This framework critically addresses core problems in philosophy of mind regarding consciousness and in epistemology concerning external world scepticism, revealing persistent limitations in objective inquiry about the self.
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on scepticism and self-identity, challenging traditional assumptions about subjective indistinguishability in sceptical hypotheses while formulating the "subject-as-object problem" to explain why personal identity questions resist resolution within objective frameworks.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- FWF Cluster of Excellence Fellowship for Knowledge in Crisis project
Academic service features extensive teaching at the University of Toronto as instructor for 17th/18th Century Philosophy and Existentialism courses, plus teaching assistant roles across philosophy curricula. Her current research is exclusively funded by the FWF grant supporting Knowledge in Crisis.
She actively contributes to the Knowledge in Crisis interdisciplinary research team at CEU, investigating systemic vulnerabilities in contemporary knowledge production through collaborative philosophical analysis.
