Lisa Chuang is an Associate Professor of Communication and Department Chair at the College of Liberal Arts, Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU). She serves as Program Director for the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication Program and has contributed to over 50 thesis/capstone committees. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Communication Information Science from University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, M.A. in Communication from HPU, and B.A. in Music from Pacific Lutheran University.
Her research focuses on intercultural communication, social media affordances, and marginalized communities, shaped by her Peace Corps experience in Northern Thailand (2007-2009) teaching indigenous Karen students. Key research areas include Saudi social media usage patterns, Reddit community dynamics, Korean drama consumption in the U.S., and music as rhetorical discourse.
Teaching emphasizes student agency through applied theory and community engagement. She developed innovative courses like User Experience and Design as a special topics offering. Current research explores Saudi students' use of social media for cross-gender communication using a social media affordance model.
Lisa's work has been presented at ICA and HICSS conferences, with publications in Communication Studies and International Journal of Intercultural Relations. She balances academia with hobbies like singing, ocean swimming, hiking, and family time with her husband and two boys.
