Dustin Moss serves as Director of the Shrimp Department at the Oceanic Institute, affiliated with Hawaii Pacific University (HPU). With over 20 years of research experience at the institute, he was promoted to Director in 2013. His work focuses on genetic improvement of marine shrimp and sustainable aquaculture technologies for global industry applications.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering from the University of Hawaii
- M.S. in Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences from Auburn University
- B.S. in Marine Biology from Hawaii Pacific University
Dr. Moss's research centers on genetic trait enhancement for growth, reproduction, and disease resistance in marine shrimp through quantitative and molecular methods. He pioneers sustainable farming using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to reduce water consumption while improving biosecurity and system stability. His genomic approaches support emerging inland shrimp farming industries in the United States.
He has secured significant funding from USDA and Department of Commerce agencies for projects including polychaete harvesting systems, low-salinity shrimp performance studies, and live feed production efficiency. International collaborations span China, India, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, and Indonesia for selective breeding programs and facility audits.
As Department Director, Dr. Moss oversees genetic nucleus facilities and biosecure broodstock production. His technical leadership extends to global aquaculture projects implementing RAS technology and establishing proprietary shrimp genetic lines for commercial operations.
