Jelena Kolarevic

Jelena Kolarevic is Professor at the Norwegian Fisheries College, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø. She leads research on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), water-quality engineering, biosensor technology and salmon welfare, and participates in several national projects aimed at automating land-based salmon farming.

Research interests revolve around the interface of technology and biology in closed-containment aquaculture. Her group develops real-time monitoring tools (acoustic, optical and biochemical sensors) to track fish behaviour, respiratory activity and water chemistry, with the overarching goal of optimising growth conditions and safeguarding welfare. Recent work explores how ozonation, photoperiod, CO₂ levels and soundscapes affect salmon performance and stress physiology.

Across 60+ articles since 2020 she has advanced: (i) RAS water treatment (ozone, organic matter, disinfection by-products), (ii) sensor-based welfare indicators (accelerometers, ventilation loggers, passive acoustics), and (iii) physiological responses to fasting, salinity, CO₂ and oxidative disinfectants. These studies collectively underpin evidence-based protocols for large-scale, land-based salmon production.

She currently heads or co-leads competitive grants including CandRAS (education for RAS industry), LAKSVEL (operational welfare indicators), Balanst (real-time control of fish-environment-energy) and multiple Nofima–UiT industry projects on ozonation, degassing and biosecurity.

Professor Kolarevic is actively involved in supervising PhD and MSc candidates within the Aquaculture and Environment research group, although individual student names are not listed in the supplied text.
