Armando García-Ortega is a Professor in Aquaculture at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo's College of Agriculture, Forestry & Natural Resource Management (CAFNRM). He specializes in sustainable fish feed production, land-based aquaculture systems, and integrated marine fish-seaweed farming using recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). His research focuses on local species like giant grouper, longfin yellowtail, and striped mullet, emphasizing algae-based feeds (Spirulina, Schizochytrium, Haematococcus) and alternative ingredients like yeast, bacteria, and insect meals.
His publications highlight advancements in replacing fishmeal and fish oil with sustainable alternatives, improving dietary protocols for carnivorous and omnivorous marine fish, and analyzing digestive physiology in larval stages. He has contributed to extension publications like the 2024 Cost Sheet for Aquatic Feed and authored multiple Spanish-language manuals on aquaculture food safety practices. García-Ortega serves on editorial boards for Aquaculture and Journal of the World Aquaculture Society, and acts as Chief Editor for Pacific Agriculture and Natural Resources.
His work spans experimental larval rearing, feed digestibility studies, and collaborations with international institutions. Current projects align with sustainable aquaculture solutions for global impact while addressing local marine species' nutritional needs.
