Chatham Callan

Chatham Callan is a researcher and Director of the Finfish Department at the Oceanic Institute, Hawaii Pacific University. With over 15 years of experience, his work focuses on the aquaculture of marine fish species such as Mullet, Jacks, Rabbitfish, Groupers, Dwarf Angelfish, and Yellow Tang. In 2015, he achieved the first successful culture of Yellow Tang, a milestone for sustainable marine aquaculture. His expertise spans collaborations in Palau, Saipan, and the Federated States of Micronesia.

• Education: Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of Maine and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
• Grants: Lead on multiple USDA and NOAA-funded projects (2014–2023) targeting sustainable aquaculture techniques for Hawaiian and Pacific species, including coral reef fish and endemic species like Kumu (Parupeneus porphyreus).

His research emphasizes reducing wild collection pressures through advanced marine finfish aquaculture, with a focus on live feed optimization, transitioning traditional Hawaiian fishponds into sustainable enterprises, and supporting regional food security and conservation.
