Dr. Lisa R. Caravan is an Assistant Professor of Music Teaching & Learning at the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education from Eastman, along with a Master of Music in performance and literature, and an Orchestral Studies Diploma. Her academic journey includes roles as Assistant Professor at Bucknell University and Auburn University, and Lecturer at Buffalo State University. Caravan is a string pedagogue, cellist, and conductor, recognized for her expertise in music education and performance. She leads clinics internationally and has directed youth orchestra programs, including the Auburn (AL) youth orchestra.
Her research focuses on music teacher preparation, cello pedagogy, and 21st-century pedagogical practices. She has presented at conferences such as the American String Teachers Association, College Music Society, and Suzuki Association of the Americas. Caravan is an active performer with groups like the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, contributing to recordings such as Black Manhattan, Volume 3, and has held principal cello roles in orchestras like the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and Binghamton Philharmonic.
Caravan’s distinctions include the Donald Shetler Music Education Prize and Excellence in Teaching awards. Her work bridges music education, performance, and community engagement, emphasizing pedagogical innovation and ensemble leadership.
