Lisa Benson is a Professor of Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University, affiliated with the Department of Bioengineering within the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from Clemson University (2002). Her research focuses on student motivation, engineering problem-solving skills, active learning methodologies, and biomechanics of human motion. Key areas include the impact of student motivation on retention and major choice, transfer of problem-solving skills to new contexts, and assessment strategies using surveys and interviews.
Her work emphasizes innovative active learning approaches in undergraduate engineering, including the use of tablet PCs to enhance learning assessment. Benson also explores first-year engineering education dynamics and biomechanical applications such as mobile inertial sensor systems for gait analysis. Her research integrates qualitative and quantitative methods to address challenges in STEM education equity, including studies on African American students' navigational capital in predominantly white institutions and the experiences of Appalachian engineering students.
