Dr. Adam Kirn is an Associate Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno. His research connects students' motivations to long-term goals and actions in engineering through mixed-methods approaches. He investigates inclusion in engineering teams, graduate education improvements, and K-12 engineering interest development.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Engineering in Science Education from Clemson University (2014)
- M.S. in Bioengineering from Clemson University (2012)
- B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (2008)
Research focuses on student motivation, engineering identity, diversity/equity/inclusion, and team dynamics. His publications analyze gender representation, problem-solving perceptions, and methodological challenges in engineering education research.
Grant leadership includes NSF-funded projects on STEM retention, engineering summer camps, graduate student motivation, diversity supports, and non-normative identities in engineering cultures. Courses taught cover engineering education pedagogy, technology, research methods, and introductory engineering design.
