Dr. Sandberg's educational background includes a PhD from Tema Genus, Linköping University (2011) with the thesis "Getting Intimate: a Feminist Analysis of Old age, Masculinity & Sexuality." Her research program bridges critical aging studies, feminist theory, and LGBTQ perspectives on dementia care through multiple externally funded projects.
Her primary research interests focus on gender, sexuality, and corporeality in relation to aging and dementia. She conducts both theoretical contributions to critical aging research and feminist scholarship alongside empirical qualitative studies. Her work particularly examines marginalized populations in elder care systems, with emphasis on LGBTQ experiences in dementia contexts and representations of masculinity in aging.
Dr. Sandberg's publication record demonstrates strong interdisciplinary connections between gender studies, critical gerontology, and dementia research. Her recent work shows increasing focus on policy implications, international comparative studies, and critical theoretical frameworks that challenge normative assumptions in dementia care. The articles reflect methodological diversity combining qualitative interviews, cultural analysis, and policy studies.
- Editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Ageing and Later Life
- Co-founder of the Critical Dementia Studies Network (2018)
- Co-editor of the book series Dementia in Critical Dialogue (Routledge)
As director of the doctoral program in gender studies, Dr. Sandberg oversees graduate education while maintaining active research supervision. Her externally funded projects include Forte-funded research (2022-2024) on LGBTQ and dementia in Swedish care systems and a Baltic Sea Foundation project (2023-2026) on queer aging futures across three European countries. She regularly engages with community stakeholders through publications like the anthology "Elderly Sexuality: Health, Rights and Pleasure" aimed at both professionals and older adults themselves.
Dr. Sandberg leads the Critical Dementia Studies Network, an international collaborative effort that has resulted in academic publications, workshops, and the Routledge book series. The network promotes interdisciplinary sharing and debate, working toward jointly written publications, co-organized events, and collaborative research across multiple institutions and countries.
