Jenny Sundén is Professor of Gender Studies at Södertörn University, affiliated with the Department of Culture and Learning. She has held visiting researcher positions at UC Berkeley (1998-1999), University of Surrey (2003), Peking University (2006, 2008), CUNY (2011), and University of Turku (2018-2019).
She received her PhD in 2002 from Tema kommunikation, Linköping University. Her research spans digital media studies, gender and sexuality studies, feminist queer theory, and affect theory, with work since the 1990s examining text-based virtual worlds, online gaming communities, and digital cultures.
Current research focuses on two interconnected tracks: feminist activism on social media (analyzing humor as resistance to sexism and harassment like slut-shaming), and digital intimacy/sexuality exploring new forms of presence, closeness, and spatiality for LGBTQ and kink communities. Her work consistently investigates the political potential of digital media to create alternative community spaces challenging societal norms.
Sundén supervises doctoral students and has authored two major monographs: Who's Laughing Now? Feminist Tactics in Social Media (MIT Press, 2020) and Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures: Passionate Play (Routledge, 2012). Her scholarly articles appear in leading journals including Ada: A Journal of Gender, New Media & Technology, Games and Culture, Feminist Media Studies, and Sexualities, demonstrating sustained interdisciplinary engagement across digital humanities and critical sexuality studies.
