Professor Clarissa Smith is a leading researcher in sexual media and representations at Northumbria University. As founding co-editor of Porn Studies and editorial board member for several gender studies journals, she examines pornography's textual formations, audience engagements, and regulatory frameworks. Her work critically analyzes how sexualized products circulate across technologies and shape cultural understandings of sexuality.
Research explores the politics of mediated sexualities, including porn-star performances, sexual storytelling authenticity, and censorship debates. Key publications include co-authored works Sexualised Masculinity: Men's Bodies in 21st Century Media Culture (2025) and Objectification: On the Difference Between Sex and Sexism (2020).
Recent publications focus on digital intimacies and young people's engagement with sexual content. Research consistently addresses gender politics, audience agency, and regulatory challenges in contemporary media landscapes. She has led major projects including the AHRC-funded Masculinity, Sex and Popular Culture research network (2019-2022).
