Dr Lindsey McCarthy is a Research Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University's Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) within the College of Social Sciences and Arts. She holds a PhD from the same institution (2015) focusing on homeless women's experiences of home and identity. Her research emphasizes the intersection of poverty, trauma, and homelessness, with a focus on marginalized groups. She has conducted influential work on trauma-informed approaches in homelessness services and led a SHU Early Career Fellowship exploring practitioners' implementation of these approaches.
Her expertise includes policy-focused research for government bodies and charities, such as the Department for Transport and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Key projects include evaluations of supported housing, rough sleeping interventions, and the financial impact of pet ownership in rental properties. She has supervised multiple PhD students examining topics like trauma-informed housing models and dignity in homeless support systems.
McCarthy’s work bridges qualitative methodologies with policy analysis, producing actionable insights for social welfare. Her recent publications address energy transitions, decarbonization, and the socio-cultural dimensions of home in low-income contexts. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary dialogues on housing, trauma, and social inclusion through her role as CRESR PhD Forum Coordinator.
