Linda Semu

Linda Semu is a Professor of Sociology at McDaniel College, where she is affiliated with the Department of Sociology in the College of Liberal Arts. She plays a key role in coordinating two interdisciplinary minors: Africana Studies and Urban and Community Studies. Her academic work bridges teaching, research, and community engagement with a strong focus on social justice and international development.

Linda Semu's research lies at the intersection of gender, international development, public health, and social change, with a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Malawi. Her work explores maternal health, HIV/AIDS, immigration, family dynamics, food security, and land rights. She employs a comparative international sociology framework, emphasizing the sociological imagination to connect personal experiences with broader societal structures.

Her recent publications reflect a consistent focus on global health, gender-based violence, and development policy. Themes include the impact of international development consensus on maternal health in Malawi, the brain drain of healthcare workers from Africa, and kinship systems in African societies. Her scholarship often bridges academic research and policy advocacy, contributing to public understanding and social change.

Her leadership extends beyond campus as Chair of the Board of the Malawi Washington Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to community development and advocacy.
