Dr. Linda Hirons is a Principal Research Fellow in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. Her work focuses on climate variability and change in Africa, sub-seasonal predictability, tropical convection, and co-producing weather and climate services for societal benefit. She leads the Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) project workpackage within the GCRF African SWIFT initiative, aiming to enhance African weather forecasting capabilities.
Education: PhD in Meteorology (2012, University of Reading).
Key Projects: Co-leads SWIFT’s S2S workpackage (2017-present), IMPALA (2015–2018), and CSSP-China (2014–2015). She also contributed to the Met Office’s MetUM-GOML coupled model development.
Research Interests: Tropical climate dynamics, monsoon systems, MJO, and the application of forecasts for agriculture and health. Her work emphasizes co-production with African stakeholders to improve decision-making.
Grants & Collaborations: Funded by UKRI, WMO, and international partners. Collaborations include Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana) and the ECMWF.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) and the Department of Meteorology’s tropical research group.
