Dr. Gui-Ying Yang is a Senior Research Fellow in Tropical Weather and Climate at the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, and a member of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS-Climate). Her research focuses on equatorial wave dynamics, their interactions with tropical weather systems, and their role in climate variability phenomena such as ENSO, QBO, and MJO. Key areas of study include the impact of equatorial waves on tropical cyclones, extreme precipitation, and the Hadley Cell circulation.
Her work bridges observational analysis and climate modeling, aiming to improve understanding of tropical atmospheric processes and their predictability. Notable contributions include studies on Borneo vortices, African easterly waves, and the development of methodologies for identifying equatorial wave structures in observational data.
Dr. Yang collaborates extensively with international research groups and contributes to climate model evaluation through projects like the Hadley Centre models. She has authored over 35 peer-reviewed articles, with recent work emphasizing real-time equatorial wave identification for weather forecasting and seasonal prediction of tropical cyclones.
