Steven Woolnough is a Professor at the University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology, affiliated with the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences. His research focuses on climate dynamics, tropical meteorology, and sub-seasonal forecasting, with contributions to the World Weather Research Programme’s Sub-seasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Prediction Project and the African SWIFT initiative. His work addresses challenges in weather and climate services, particularly in Africa, emphasizing extreme rainfall prediction, monsoon dynamics, and climate adaptation.
Key research interests include atmospheric processes such as equatorial waves, Madden-Julian Oscillation, and ocean-atmosphere interactions. He co-leads projects like the African SWIFT to enhance climate resilience in vulnerable regions. Over 100 publications span prestigious journals like Journal of Climate, Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, and Nature Communications.
While no formal awards are listed, his contributions to climate science and operational forecasting are significant. He collaborates globally with institutions like ECMWF, NASA, and Brazilian research bodies. Current work emphasizes improving sub-seasonal forecasts for decision-making in agriculture, health, and conservation sectors.
