Lida Katsimpardi is a neuroscience researcher at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, where she has been working since 2016 in the Perception and Memory Unit directed by Pierre-Marie Lledo.
Dr. Katsimpardi completed her PhD (2004-2008) at the Hellenic Institut Pasteur and University of Montpellier focusing on neural precursors in adult mice. She then conducted post-doctoral research (2008-2015) at Harvard University's Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology.
Her primary research investigates how young blood contains proteins capable of rejuvenating aged brains. She discovered that transferring blood from young experimental models to older ones results in tissue rejuvenation, including increased blood vessel diameter, rejuvenated neural stem cells, and improved cognitive function. Her work has identified GDF11 as a key revitalizing blood factor, opening new avenues for understanding brain aging mechanisms.
Dr. Katsimpardi's most significant publication appeared in Science journal in May 2014, documenting the rejuvenating effects of young blood on aged brains. This research represents a paradigm shift in understanding brain aging and potential therapeutic approaches for neurodegenerative conditions.
Dr. Katsimpardi recommends maintaining brain health through a healthy, varied diet, regular physical activity (which stimulates neurogenesis and vascularization), and avoiding routine and stress, emphasizing that the brain has considerable plasticity throughout our lifetime.
