Michael Anthony Bonaguidi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California (USC) in the Departments of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Gerontology, and Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on the reciprocal interactions between neural stem cells and their microenvironment across normal, aging, injured, and diseased brain states, with a particular emphasis on epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and cognitive rejuvenation.
- Research Interests: Neural stem cell biology, adult neurogenesis, aging, neurodegenerative diseases, single-cell genomics, and biomedical engineering.
- Grants: Co-PI on a $500,000, two-year Cure Alzheimer’s Fund grant to study neural stem cell aging in relation to air pollution and genetic risk factors.
- Labs & Collaborations: Leads the Bonaguidi Lab at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC. Collaborates with USC neurosurgeons Charles Liu and Jonathan Russin on epilepsy studies.
- Publications: Recent work explores adult neurogenesis in epilepsy, stem cell aging, and inflammation in age-related diseases, utilizing single-cell RNA-seq and systems biology approaches.
- Students: Mentors postdoctoral fellow Aswathy Ammothumkandy and PhD candidate Albina Ibrayeva.
