Liav Orgad

Liav Orgad serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. He also holds multiple prestigious academic positions including Director of the 'Global Citizenship Law' Project at EUI, Head of the Research Group 'International Citizenship Law' at WZB Berlin Social Science Center, and Recurrent Visiting Professor at Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, Israel. His academic trajectory includes previous appointments as Fellow-in-Residence at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, Visiting Professor at Columbia Law School, Marie Curie Fellow at Freie Universität Berlin, Fulbright Scholar at NYU Law School, and Jean-Monnet Fellow at EUI.

Orgad's research focuses on the intersection of citizenship, migration, and technology in the global context. His work explores innovative concepts such as International Citizenship Law (ICIL), blockchain membership systems, and matching algorithms for citizenship allocation. He investigates how traditional notions of citizenship are challenged in the age of global economy, technology, and increased mobility, with particular attention to majority-minority relations and tolerance policies in Europe. His research bridges legal theory, political philosophy, and technological innovation to address contemporary challenges in citizenship governance.

Orgad is the author of The Cultural Defense of Nations: A Liberal Theory of Majority Rights (Oxford University Press, 2016) and has received significant recognition including the Eric Stein Prize for 'best scholarly article' by the American Society for Comparative Law (2011). His current research project, funded by an ERC Starting Grant on 'Global Citizenship Law,' aims to establish a new subfield in international law that would regulate nationality law in a globalized context.

As a Member of the Global Young Academy, Orgad heads the Working Group 'Global Migration and Human Rights,' demonstrating his commitment to addressing pressing global challenges through interdisciplinary research and policy engagement. His work combines theoretical rigor with practical relevance, seeking to develop innovative frameworks for understanding and managing citizenship in an increasingly interconnected world.
