Rainer Bauböck is a Visiting Fellow in the Global Governance Programme of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI). He serves as chair of the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Commission on Migration and Integration Research. Previously, he held the chair in social and political theory at EUI's Department of Political and Social Sciences (2007-2018) and served as Dean of Graduate Studies (2012-2016).
His research centers on normative political theory and comparative analysis of democratic citizenship systems, with specialized focus on European integration dynamics, migration governance, nationalist movements, and minority rights frameworks. He co-directs GLOBALCIT—an online observatory tracking citizenship and voting rights legislation across 190+ countries—with researchers from EUI, University of Edinburgh, and University of Maastricht.
Scientific Recognition
- Latsis Prize of the European Science Foundation (2006) for foundational work on immigration integration and social cohesion in modern democracies
- Elected Corresponding Member Abroad of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2013) for contributions to political theory and migration studies
Bauböck maintains extensive international academic engagement through visiting positions at Yale University, Princeton University, Central European University, and University of Göttingen. His leadership extends to presidency of the Austrian Association of Political Science (2003-2005) and recurrent teaching in CEU's Nationalism Studies Program.
