She holds the Rohm & Haas Endowed Professorship in Public Health Sciences. Her research focuses on air pollution epidemiology, exposure modeling, and environmental health disparities, with a particular emphasis on neurotoxicant effects and multi-pollutant exposures. She leads NIH-funded training programs, including the Biostatistics, Epidemiologic & Bioinformatics Training in Environmental Health and the SURE-EH diversity initiative.
Education:
- PhD in Biostatistics, University of Washington (1992)
- MSc in Biostatistics, Johns Hopkins University (1985)
- BA in Psychology, Johns Hopkins University (1979)
Research Highlights: Dr. Sheppard’s work addresses the health impacts of air pollution, including links to dementia, cardiovascular disease, and pediatric outcomes. She has pioneered methods for integrating mobile monitoring data and low-cost sensors into exposure assessments. Her recent studies highlight disparities in air quality exposure related to redlining and socioeconomic status.
Key Awards & Roles:
- Fellow of the American Statistical Association
- Chair of EPA’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee
- Member of EPA’s Scientific Advisory Board
Grants & Advising: Oversee NIH training grants and collaborates on projects like the Adult Changes in Thought Air Pollution study. Her work emphasizes diversity in environmental health sciences through initiatives like SURE-EH.
Labs/Teams: Active in DEOHS research groups focused on air pollution epidemiology and the UW School of Public Health’s environmental health programs.
