Joel D. Kaufman is a Professor at the University of Washington School of Public Health with appointments in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences, Medicine (General Internal Medicine), and Epidemiology. A physician-epidemiologist board-certified in internal and occupational medicine, he has been a full-time faculty member at UW since 1997. He serves as Director of the UW Center for Exposures, Diseases, Genomics and Environment at DEOHS and was named editor-in-chief of Environmental Health Perspectives in 2019. As an elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine, Dr. Kaufman is a leading researcher in environmental health sciences.
Dr. Kaufman's research integrates epidemiology, exposure sciences, toxicology and clinical medicine, with primary focus on environmental factors in chronic diseases. His current research interests include environmental and occupational epidemiology, health effects of ambient and traffic-related air pollution, environmental factors in cardiovascular, respiratory and neurodegenerative diseases, and occupational asthma. He directs the UW Northlake Controlled Exposure Facility for experimental inhalation toxicology studies on health effects of combustion products, including diesel exhaust.
Dr. Kaufman leads several major research projects including the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air), which has followed over 6,000 participants since 2000 to understand air pollution's relationship with cardiovascular disease. His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on air pollution health effects across multiple systems, with recent work examining connections between air pollution and neurological outcomes, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health, and respiratory conditions. His research often employs sophisticated exposure assessment methods and large cohort studies.
- Editor-in-chief of Environmental Health Perspectives (2019-present)
- Elected member of the US National Academy of Medicine
- Director of the UW Center for Exposures, Diseases, Genomics and Environment
- Principal Investigator of MESA Air study
As a mentor, Dr. Kaufman has guided numerous graduate students through the Environmental Health Assessment Program and Climate and Health Program. His advising spans environmental exposure assessment, air pollution health effects research, and epidemiological methods. He directs a specialized inhalation toxicology facility addressing health effects of traffic-derived air pollutants and has been featured extensively in national media discussing air pollution, wildfires, and climate-related health impacts.
