Liane Hewitt is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on transnational political economy and international order, particularly the interplay between corporate power and state sovereignty. She holds a PhD from Princeton University (2024), an MA from Princeton (2020), and a BA from the University of British Columbia (2017).
Her primary work examines the rise and fall of international cartels in the 20th century, exploring how these entities shaped global economic governance. A second project investigates the historical evolution of economic democracy, while a side project analyzes the relationship between cartels, tariffs, and deglobalization. She has been supported by prestigious fellowships including the Chateaubriand Fellowship and DAAD grants.
Before joining Penn, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for History and Economics in Paris, collaborating with Harvard and Cambridge Universities. She teaches courses on corporate history, modern Europe, and the history of capitalism. Her publications include articles in Enterprise & Society and Journal of Global History, alongside public writings in Foreign Policy.
