Dr. Liam Maloney is a Lecturer at the School of Arts and Creative Technologies, University of York, where he teaches Music & Sound Recording and Dance Music Cultures. His academic journey includes a BA Hons in Sound Technology from Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (2007), an MSc in Music & Creative Industries Management from University of Bolton (2011) with a dissertation on digital taste dissemination, and a PhD in Music from University of York (2020) titled Music Like Water, examining music functions through ESM studies. He received the Vice-Chancellor’s award for outstanding academic achievement (2011) and a Humanities Research Doctoral Fellowship (2018).

Liam’s research spans five domains: (1) Music Production and History, focusing on studios as instruments and electronic music production; (2) Dance & Electronic Music Sociomusicology, analyzing race, gender, and LGBTQ+ history in music; (3) Sound and Listening Studies, tracing recording technologies’ evolution; (4) Music in Everyday Life, investigating utilitarian music functions; and (5) Qualitative and Mixed Methods, including ethnography and bibliometrics. He co-leads the Dance Music Cultures Research Group and maintains the Foundations of House project.
His recent work includes studies on music and AI ethics (2021-2022), vinyl collecting (2024-2026), and music’s role in pandemic isolation (2021). He collaborates with institutions like the Digital Creativity Labs and Routledge press.

Liam’s research is funded by the MCEC project (2020-2021) with Dr. H. Egermann, and he supervises PhD proposals in his expertise areas. He works closely with Digital Creativity Labs and has presented at venues like the Royal Institution and Bridgewater Hall.
