Lia Brozgal is a Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She previously lectured at Harvard University and served as a visiting professor at Bryn Mawr’s Institut d’Avignon (France). Her research focuses on contemporary French and North African literature, film, and cultural history, with particular emphasis on colonialism, postcolonial identity, and Judeo-Maghrebi narratives.
Education: Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures (Harvard University), B.A. in French (Chatham College).
Her major works include Absent the Archive (2020), analyzing the 1961 Paris massacre; Against Autobiography (2013) on Albert Memmi’s theoretical contributions; and co-edited collections like A Jewish Childhood in the Muslim Mediterranean (2023), a finalist for the National Jewish Book Awards. She has also translated significant texts from French to English, including works by Albert Memmi and Abraham Serfaty.
Her awards include an ACLS Fellowship (2015-16) and Camargo Foundation residency (2014). She teaches courses on Francophone cinema, postcolonial autobiography, and Jewish North African cultural production. Professional activities include editorial roles with The Literary Encyclopedia and active membership in the Modern Language Association.
