Carine Bourget is a Professor of French and Francophone Studies and Department Head at the University of Arizona's College of Humanities. Her research focuses on Islamic intertext in Maghrebi literature, religious conflicts in Francophone Arab world cultural production, and integration challenges faced by Muslim minorities in France. She is affiliated with the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies and Religious Studies. Bourget has authored three influential books: Coran et tradition islamique dans la littérature maghrébine (2002), The Star, the Cross, and the Crescent (2010), and Islamic Schools in France (2019). Her work critically examines representations of Islam, identity politics, and educational policies in postcolonial contexts. She was a 2014 finalist for the university-wide Five Star Faculty Award, selected by undergraduates for teaching excellence. Bourget’s research also explores pedagogical approaches to integrating immigrant communities through language education and cultural projects like Filme ton quartier.
Her scholarly output spans literary analysis, sociopolitical commentary, and education policy critiques. Recent articles address topics such as prophetic narratives in Francophone fiction, challenges in Islamic schooling systems, and the interplay between national identity and religious practice. Bourget’s methodology bridges literary studies with social sciences, offering interdisciplinary insights into contemporary multicultural challenges. She currently holds office hours in 549C2 Modern Languages Building and is on sabbatical during Spring 2024.
