Hamid Bahri is an Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies at York College, CUNY, and serves as the Study Abroad Liaison. He holds a PhD in French from the Graduate Center, CUNY (2004), with prior degrees including an MPhil (2004), MA (1994), and a translation certificate (1992).
His research focuses on postcolonial North Africa, Arab cultural studies, translation theory, and film. Current work examines ethnicities, race, and origin myths in North Africa. He teaches Francophone literature, culture, and elementary French.
Publications span academic articles, book chapters, and reviews in journals like Choice. Notable works include analyses of Assia Djebar’s novels and Amin Maalouf’s historical narratives. His presentations include panels on Édouard Glissant, Maghrebi Jewish authors, and post-Arab Spring cultural dynamics.
He has received grants for research on race in North African literature and cultural identity. Awards include Dean’s Recognition (2013-2014) and a Writing Fellow Fellowship (2001-2003). Professional affiliations include the MLA, SPFFA, and Middle East Studies Association.
Bahri advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to Francophone studies and global cultural exchange through teaching and academic service.
