Lewis A. Kornhauser is the Frank Henry Sommer Professor of Law at New York University School of Law. His research focuses on the economic analysis of law, courts, and legal theory, applying microeconomic methodologies to legal and political institutions. He holds a PhD in Economics (UC Berkeley, 1980), a JD (UC Berkeley School of Law, 1976), and undergraduate degrees in Mathematics from Brown University (1972).
His work bridges law and economics, examining topics such as stare decisis, corporate law, and judicial behavior. Courses taught include Economic Analysis of Law, Courts, and Law's Authority. Recent publications explore claim resolution frameworks, governance structures, and strategic dynamics in appellate courts.
Kornhauser’s research emphasizes foundational questions in jurisprudence, including the role of law in governance and the design of adjudicatory systems. He is affiliated with NYU Law’s Center for Law, Economics, and Organization and contributes to interdisciplinary legal scholarship.
