Leslie McCall is the Presidential Professor of Sociology and Political Science at the CUNY Graduate Center and serves as Associate Director of the Stone Center. Previously, she held a professorship at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on public opinion regarding inequality, economic opportunity, and policy responses, alongside empirical analyses of earnings and family income disparities, and intersectional inequality frameworks. She has authored influential books such as The Undeserving Rich: American Beliefs about Inequality, Opportunity, and Redistribution (2013) and Complex Inequality: Gender, Class, and Race in the New Economy (2001). Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Russell Sage Foundation, and others. Dr. McCall’s recent projects incorporate machine learning tools to analyze media coverage of inequality and experimental survey methods to study public attitudes.
Her academic contributions include groundbreaking studies on the political implications of class position in wealthy democracies, gender wage gaps, and the evolving methodologies in qualitative coding. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Russell Sage Foundation Visiting Scholar (2023–2024). McCall actively engages in interdisciplinary collaborations, hosting workshops like the Inequality by the Numbers series, and participates in public discussions on economic policy and social justice.
