Leslie Hewitt

Leslie Hewitt is an Associate Professor of Art at Rice University's Department of Art. Previously, she taught at Barnard College (2012-2017) and The Cooper Union School of Art (2017-2022), where she co-organized interdisciplinary seminars and public lectures. Her work bridges studio practice with critical research in African diasporic art histories and social justice frameworks.

Education: Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, Yale University School of Art, and New York University (Clark Fellow in Africana and Visual Culture Studies).

Research focuses on materiality, archival practices, and community-based art. Major exhibitions include the Whitney Biennial (2008), Dia Art Foundation, MoMA, Guggenheim Museum, and Walker Art Center. Residencies include the Moody Center at Rice University, Studio Museum in Harlem, and the American Academy in Berlin.

Recipient of prestigious awards including Guggenheim Fellowship (2020) and Anonymous Was A Woman Award (2022). Engaged in pedagogical initiatives such as Harlem Semester at Barnard College.
