Lesley Smith is a Professor of Women's Public Health at the University of Hull, affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Her research focuses on maternal health, alcohol-related harm prevention, and adolescent sexual and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa. She leads the Hull Global Health Research Network and advises the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. Her work includes developing interventions to reduce alcohol exposure during pregnancy and improving antenatal care practices.
Key research interests include preconception care, midwifery-led interventions, and behavioral science approaches to public health. She established the Zumba 4 Bump initiative, a community-based antenatal support program. Recent studies explore alcohol guidelines implementation, mHealth interventions for adolescents in Kenya, and the interplay between physical activity and alcohol consumption during the pandemic.
Lesley oversees grants totaling over £9 million from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and others, including projects on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and bowel cancer screening. She supervises PhD students in alcohol research and global health. Her contributions span over 50 peer-reviewed articles and digital artifacts advocating for evidence-based practices in maternal and reproductive health.
