Lerone A. Martin is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centennial Professor in Religious Studies and African & African American Studies at Stanford University, holding the Nina C. Crocker Faculty Scholar title. He also directs the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute. His work bridges religious history, race, and politics, with a focus on African American religious practices and their intersection with societal structures.
Research interests include the historical role of technology in religious expression, the FBI’s influence on white Christian nationalism, and the cultural dimensions of African American religious movements. Recent projects include a graphic novel and nonfiction book on Martin Luther King Jr.’s adolescence.
He leads the $1 million Henry Luce Foundation-funded Crossroads Project, advancing public understanding of African American religious history. Awards include the 2015 American Society of Church History First Book Award and fellowships from the NEH, ACLS, and others. His media contributions span PBS, NPR, and major publications.
Teaching accolades include Wabash Center fellowships and institutional awards. He advises the PBS documentary on gospel music and preaching history, reflecting his commitment to public scholarship.
