Professor Douglas E. Thompson serves as Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at Mercer University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He additionally directs the Spencer B. King, Jr. Center for Southern Studies and edits the Journal of Southern Religion.

Dr. Thompson specializes in 20th century American history with deep expertise in the American South, religious history, and Civil Rights Movement dynamics. His research examines intersections of religion, race, and social change—particularly analyzing Richmond's religious leaders during Massive Resistance and Martin Luther King Jr.'s anti-war activism. Current projects include a University of Georgia Press-contracted book on King and the Vietnam War, plus a synthetic work explaining 20th century American evangelicalism for first-year students.
