Douglas Ambrose is the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of History at Hamilton College, specializing in early America, the Old South, and American religious history. He holds a Ph.D. from SUNY Binghamton, an M.A. from the University of Rochester, and a B.A. from Rutgers University.
His research focuses on Antebellum Southern intellectual history, Christianity in America, and colonial American history, with particular attention to the intersection of religion and slavery. His publications include analyses of proslavery theological arguments and critical reevaluations of Southern political philosophy.

Ambrose has served as Chair of the History Department (2009-12) and advises the Christopher Dawson Society. He teaches courses on early American history, the Civil War, and religious history.
