Leonardo Michele Scarinzi is a Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna, where he has taught Foundry and Molding Techniques since 1995. He works as a freelance artist based in Foggia, specializing in transcendental sculpture that explores the spiritual dimension of human essence. His distinctive artistic style features gaunt human figures that evoke monks or hermits, stripped of materiality to emphasize meditative and transcendent qualities.
Scarinzi's artistic research delves into the depths of human essence, seeking a spiritual dimension where humanity can ascend toward infinity. His sculptures, often created in bronze (a material he masters as an expert caster), present a gaunt human figure that art critic Angelo Panerai describes as 'made of skin and bones, like a gaunt, malnourished, sickly woman.' This approach moves beyond classical Greek forms, medieval symbolism, and modernist fragmentation to explore an 'alien yet always ideal beauty' that reduces humanity 'to the spirit,' requiring 'a certain imponderability.'
As an educator, Scarinzi teaches two key courses: Foundry Techniques (ABAV10) and Forming, Technology and Type of Materials (ABAV8), both within the Sculpture program. His teaching philosophy emphasizes direct physical engagement with materials as 'opportunities for cultural expression, as knowledge, as an awareness of one's social role, as a highly educational function, and even as a way of being.'
Scarinzi has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad and has created several public works. His technical expertise spans various molding techniques including tile molding, gelatin molding, synthetic rubber molding, and disposable molding, as well as casting processes such as lost-wax casting, pressure casting, cuttlebone casting, and centrifugal casting.
