Gregory A. Bailey is an Associate Professor of Art at Connecticut College, where he has been teaching since 2002. He specializes in sculpture and installation art within the Department of Art, contributing significantly to the studio arts curriculum.
His educational background includes a B.A. from Sonoma State University and an M.F.A. from the University of Hartford (1998).
As an artist, Bailey creates work that serves as his direct response to the world, combining technical mastery with conceptual depth. His practice explores the interconnectedness of environment and self through diverse materials and techniques. He engages with political, social, and cultural commentary, often incorporating wit, humor, and irony. His recent work focuses on large-scale installations that transform gallery spaces, creating immersive experiences that challenge viewers' perceptions.
In teaching, Bailey balances technical instruction with conceptual development across courses including ART 102 (Foundations: Concepts in Three Dimensions), ART 226 (Sculpture Workshop: Construction and Installation), ART 225 (Mold Making and Casting), and ART 234 (Sculpture Workshop: Beyond the Object). His approach emphasizes both practical material use and expressive development, integrating contemporary critical issues with current art practices. He maintains a collaborative learning environment where he and students discover new aspects of sculpture together.
Bailey participates actively in departmental exhibitions, including the 2025 "Adaptation" Faculty Exhibition, where he is scheduled to give a gallery talk on September 30, 2025. He utilizes the department's well-equipped facilities, including the bronze foundry in Cummings Arts Center, to support student learning and his own artistic practice.
