Leon Kunz is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Taiwan Studies and the Department of Government at The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on social movements, democratization, and performative politics in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China. He holds degrees from the Free University of Berlin (B.A., 2013), Humboldt University of Berlin (M.A., 2016), SOAS University of London (M.Sc., 2014 and Ph.D., 2021).
His research interests include comparative political theory, queer politics, and East Asian international relations. His doctoral work examined democracy strategies in Taiwan’s Sunflower and Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movements, addressing broader questions of prefiguration and deliberation.
