Dr. Leon Foster is a Researcher at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research (CSER) at Sheffield Hallam University, specializing in performance analysis systems and materials testing. He holds a MEng in Sports Engineering from the University of Bath and a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University (2012), focusing on technology's influence on athletic performance. His work includes developing hardware/software tools for elite athletes and public-use technologies via the EU-funded ProFit project. He manages laboratory equipment, teaches on MSc Sports Engineering and BSc Sports Technology courses, and supervises PhD students.
Research focuses include auxetic materials for sports safety (e.g., helmets), athlete performance monitoring, and non-motorized mobility modeling. Collaborations involve Manchester Metropolitan University, TU Delft, and the English Institute of Sport. His expertise spans sports equipment design, biomechanics, and applied computing. He has delivered public lectures on physics in sports and contributed to blogs analyzing athletes like Usain Bolt.
- Current Projects: EIS Innovation Partnership, Auxetics for Safety Equipment, SETA Horizon 2020
- Teaching Modules: Sports Mechanics (module leader), Mechanics of Sports Equipment
His lab-developed protocols evaluate protective equipment safety. CSER, led by Dr. David James, is a global leader in sports engineering, partnering with organizations like FIFA and Adidas.
