Dr Leighton Jones serves as a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science (Exercise Psychology) at Sheffield Hallam University's Academy of Sport and Physical Activity. He joined in 2015 after prior roles at Brunel University London, Liverpool John Moores University, and Bishop Grosseteste University. His research focuses on psychological, psychophysiological, and neurophysiological effects of exercise interventions, particularly music and multimedia stimuli. He teaches modules like Foundations of Psychology in Sport and Exercise, Research Methods, and Work-based Learning.
Research interests include exercise motivation, behavior change, and the application of immersive technologies (e.g., virtual environments) to enhance exercise experiences. Notable work explores music's role in HIIT tolerance, affective responses to resistance training, and the embodiment-presence-interactivity framework in exercise contexts.
His publications span 20+ peer-reviewed articles since 2006, with recent contributions on mindfulness in exercise and decennial updates to music-tempo preference models. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate programs in Sport and Exercise Science and Physical Activity, Sport, and Health. He supervises student projects and actively contributes to curriculum development.
