Dr. Christopher Kirk is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Physiology at the School of Sport and Physical Activity, University of Sheffield Hallam. He serves as Course Leader for the MSc Applied Sport and Exercise Sciences and is a BASES Endorsed Laboratory Director. With a PhD from Liverpool John Moores University (2022), he has extensive teaching experience since 2006, progressing from further education colleges to university roles. His research focuses on combat sports performance, particularly MMA, emphasizing physiological principles to enhance athlete health and performance. Key collaborations include the International MMA Federation and the English MMA Association.
Education: BSc (Hons) from Sheffield Hallam (2003), MSc (Research) from University of Central Lancashire (2014), PhD from Liverpool John Moores (2022).
Research interests span training load management, combat sport weight strategies, and neurophysiological effects of repeated impacts. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed articles and actively contributes to editorial roles across journals like PLOS ONE and Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Awards include FHEA, CSci, and CSCS certifications. Current PhD supervision focuses on head accelerations in boxing and affective responses during exercise.
Professional roles include External Examiner at the University of Central Lancashire and membership in organizations like BASES and NSCA. His applied work includes strength and conditioning coaching for rugby, MMA, and Olympic weightlifting athletes.
