Lee M. Penyak is an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University’s Department of History (College of Social Science) and an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Scranton. He holds a B.A. from Fairfield University (1984), and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut (1985, 1993). His research focuses on colonial Latin America, with specialties in gender, sexuality, religion, and haciendas.
Penyak’s doctoral work examined criminality in late colonial Mexico, particularly sex crimes, leading to publications on topics like female confinement, spousal abuse, and same-sex attraction. He has also authored works on religion and haciendas, edited three volumes in these areas, and directed Scranton’s Latin American Studies program. From 2016–2021, he served as Director of Study Abroad at Western Michigan University.
