Erin M. Hanses is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Pennsylvania State University, holding appointments in the Department of Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program. She specializes in classical languages, literature, and interdisciplinary studies of sex, gender, and identity in ancient Greece and Rome. Her research bridges historical analysis with modern methodologies, such as critical phenomenology, to explore figures like Sulpicia in Roman elegy.
Dr. Hanses teaches courses on Roman civilization, Greco-Roman history, archaeology, classical mythology, and Latin language at all levels. She also leads Penn State’s summer study abroad programs in Rome, integrating experiential learning into her pedagogy.
Her current book project, Recovering Sulpicia: Women, Poetry, and Power in Ancient Rome, reimagines the enigmatic poet Sulpicia through a lens of identity and literary connectivity in Roman elegy. Her published work examines Epicurean philosophy in Latin love elegy, gendered interpretations of Nature in classical texts, and the evolution of representations of female pleasure from antiquity to modernity.
