Alison Keith is a University Professor and Director of the Jackman Humanities Institute at the University of Toronto, with cross-appointments in the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Women and Gender Studies Institute. Her research focuses on Latin literature, particularly the intersection of gender and genre, with a specialization in Roman epic and elegy.
- Education: PhD from University of Michigan
Research Interests include Latin literature, Roman culture, gender studies in antiquity, and classical reception in medieval and early modern Europe. She has authored influential studies on Ovid, Propertius, Virgil, and Roman Epicureanism.
Recent publications highlight her work on Virgil, Latin elegy, Roman dress, and maternal themes in classical texts. She is currently writing a biography of Sulpicia and a commentary on Ovid’s Metamorphoses IV.
Scientific Awards include fellowships at Clare Hall (Cambridge), Albert-Ludwigs-Universität (Freiburg), and the National Humanities Center.
She has held leadership roles as Chair of the Department of Classics (2007-2013, Acting 2016-2017), President of the Classical Association of Canada (2010-2012), and will serve as President of the Society for Classical Studies (2024). She co-edits the Phoenix Supplementary Series and the sub-series Phoenix Studies in Gender.
