Lee Ligon is an Associate Professor of Biological Sciences and Associate Dean of Science for Academic Affairs at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's School of Science. She specializes in cell biology, neuroscience, and cancer research, focusing on the microtubule cytoskeleton and tumor microenvironment dynamics.
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience (University of Virginia, 1999)
- M.A. in History (University of Virginia, 1992)
- B.A. in Bio-Psychology (Neurobiology) and Letters (Interdisciplinary Humanities) (Wesleyan University, 1987)
Her research explores how cells maintain complex 3D shapes through cytoskeletal organization and investigates the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer metastasis. She also pioneered work on inclusive pedagogy and equitable student success frameworks.
Recent publications highlight her dual expertise in cell biology (microtubule dynamics, tumor microenvironment modeling) and STEM equity (LGBTQ+ representation in science). Notable awards include the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowship (2015-2016) and American Cancer Society Research Scholar Grant.
- Ligon Lab: Studies cytoskeleton-cell communication in epithelial polarity and cancer progression
- Leadership Roles: Co-Chair of RPI LGBTQ+ Task Force and former ASCB Public Information Committee member
- Policy Work: Focused on international LGBTQI development inclusion at USAID during her AAAS Fellowship
