Leann Mclaren is a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a 2024 PhD in Political Science from Duke University, with a certificate in African and African American Studies. Her research focuses on race in American politics, particularly Black political behavior, social identity dynamics, and immigration politics.
Her innovative book project examines strategies employed by Black political candidates with 'invisible identities,' such as immigrant backgrounds, in U.S. elections. This work utilizes original datasets of Black immigrant politicians and combines content analysis with survey experiments to analyze identity-based campaign strategies. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, American Political Science Association, and Russell Sage Foundation.
Mclaren’s work has been published in leading journals including The American Political Science Review and Journal of Race, Ethnicity and Politics. Her scholarship explores intersections of race, identity, and political participation, with additional projects mapping Black political engagement in social movements.
