Dr. Lawson G. Stone serves as Professor of Old Testament at Asbury Theological Seminary since 1987, with expertise spanning Old Testament Theology, Early Israelite History, and biblical books including Joshua, Judges, Leviticus, and Jeremiah. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he previously served as a missionary in Kenya teaching at village high schools and conducting evangelism.
His academic credentials include:
- B.A. from Asbury College (1977)
- M.Div. from Asbury Theological Seminary (1981)
- Ph.D. from Yale University (1988)
Research focuses on historical-critical analysis of Israelite origins and theological interpretation of biblical texts, particularly examining conquest narratives and ethical frameworks within historical contexts. His work bridges scholarly exegesis with practical ministry applications through commentaries and reference works.
Publications demonstrate consistent engagement with Judges (2011, 2012 commentaries) and Joshua (2017 NICOT volume), evolving toward contemporary ethical issues including sexuality, violence, and sport-hunting ethics. These works integrate archaeological evidence with theological reflection for both academic and pastoral audiences.
His sole major recognition is the John Wesley Fellowship during doctoral studies at Yale University.
Dr. Stone actively mentors through the Israel Summer Studies program he coordinates, leading annual student trips to archaeological sites in Israel and Jordan while participating in excavations. He also contributed as a translator for the New Living Translation and maintains ecclesiastical engagement through preaching and teaching.
He serves on the founding steering committee of the Society of Biblical Literature's Joshua-Judges Group and contributes to archaeological research in Israel while developing resources for church ministry contexts.
