Dr. Trull's research centers on Old Testament exegesis, hermeneutics, and homiletics with emphasis on narrative analysis, wisdom literature, and contemporary application. He explores irony in biblical texts (Esther, Job), ethical dilemmas in modern contexts, and the intersection of ancient scripture with current issues like Critical Race Theory. His work consistently bridges academic scholarship with practical ministry needs, particularly in preaching and pastoral counseling.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications (2023-2006) reveals persistent engagement with Old Testament narrative techniques, hermeneutical precision, and real-world application. Key thematic threads include: the use of irony in prophetic and wisdom literature, ethical application of biblical texts in sensitive areas (abuse, race, marriage), and methodological approaches to preaching that maintain textual integrity while addressing modern challenges. His publications span academic journals (Bibliotheca Sacra, Evangelical Theological Society) and popular resources (Bible Study Magazine), demonstrating dual commitment to scholarly rigor and accessible ministry tools.
Dr. Trull actively mentors students in biblical studies and ministry preparation, having shaped curriculum for Corban's School of Ministry. His leadership extends to professional societies where he served as President and Vice President of the Northwest Evangelical Theological Society. He integrates field experience through international study tours and church-based ministry, creating holistic educational opportunities that connect classroom learning with real-world application.
His ministry vision manifests through strategic initiatives including the Africa Training Partnership for cross-cultural theological education and the Whole Word Institute partnership. These programs reflect his commitment to global theological training and practical ministry development, extending Corban's educational mission beyond traditional classroom boundaries.
