Lawrence Gibbons is a Professor in the Department of Physics at Cornell University within the College of Arts and Sciences, holding this position since 2015 after serving as Associate Professor (2004-2015) and Assistant Professor (1997-2004). His academic journey began with a Research Associate position at the University of Rochester (1993-1997).
His educational background includes a B.A. (1985) and Ph.D. (1993), both from the University of Chicago.
Gibbons specializes in experimental precision measurements at the forefront of particle physics, leading critical work on the Muon g-2 experiment (E989) at Fermilab. His research targets the anomalous magnetic moment of muons with 0.1 parts-per-million precision to detect Beyond Standard Model physics through CP violation studies, weak interaction analyses, and electroweak symmetry breaking investigations. This work directly interfaces with Large Hadron Collider discoveries and leverages Cornell's accelerator physics expertise through CLASSE collaboration.
He maintains active mentorship of graduate researchers including recent graduates David Sweigart, Aleko Khukhunaishvili, Richard Gray, Nadia Adam, Matt Shepherd, Tom Meyer, and Veronique Boisvert, alongside current students Tyler Barrett and Zepyoor Khechadoorian.
Gibbons' leadership in the international Muon g-2 collaboration has generated significant scientific impact, with findings featured in major physics breakthroughs including doubled-precision muon measurements and research suggesting pathways to undiscovered particles.
